A richly adorned Viking ship, Osebergskipet, was discovered in a grave mound north of the city in 1903. Dated from 834, the discovery is considered by many archaeologists to be just as important as the discovery of the tombs in the Egyptian pyramids.
Tønsberg offers the most exciting outdoor recreation in eastern Norway, and the skerries and islands off the coast og Tønsberg create a magical summer paradise - with stunning, sandy beaches and many opportunities for hiking in beautiful, hospitable natural surroundings.
Tønsberg has retained much of its idyllic small town charm. Althoug in recent years commercial expansion has brought large, moden buildings, the city still has a cosy downtown area where you can take a stroll and experience peaceful residential areas filled with reminders of Tønsbergs past.
Visit Slottsfjellet ; past area of royal power and war fever, political power plays and saga drama. Slottsfjellet is a symbol of the great era of Tønsberg with its rich history. From Castrum Tunsbergis, king Håkon Håkonsson ruled over Norway when the nation was at the height of its power and glory.
