This is primary school

The primary school is the 10-year compulsory school in Norway

These can receive primary and lower secondary school

• Those over the age of 16 who do not have or lack a diploma from primary school
• You must have a valid residence permit in Norway
• Asylum seekers between the age of 16 and 18 is also intitled
• Residents living in Tønsberg - Tønsberg Learning Centre decides whether you are intitled for compulsory education and make the resolution
• Residents living in Færder - Færder municipality decides whether you are intitled for compulsory education and make the resolution
• Applications should be sent to Tønsberg Learning Centre

This is what you get

• You will be taught in the subjects Norwegian, mathematics, English, natural science and social studies
• The tutoring will last from one to three years, depending on school background and Norwegian level at start-up.
• All teaching take place during the day. Full time equals 30 hours per week.
• It is possible to take fewer subjects per year if you want to combine education with work.
• You will be given a final grade in all subjects. The grading scale is from 1 – 6, where 1 is the lowest and 6 the highest. Grades are set according to the competence goals for 10th grade in Knowledge Promotion Reform LK20
• You are selected for written and oral exams in the same way as in regular primary and lower secondary school. The exam dates are determined centrally and are in the period from mid-May to mid-June

Residents living in the municipalities of Tønsberg and Færder get the school for free. The mapping of rights for primary school is performed by Tønsberg Learning Centre

Assessment of Prior experiential learning

This is an alternative to primary and lower secondary education. You have the acquired competence from primary and lower secondary school but lack the documentation.

Prior experiential learning comprises all the formal or informal competence a person has acquired through education, work and running business. It is necessary to get an assessment of the prior experiential learning if you want to seek admission to an upper secondary school without necessary documents which can prove that you have finished primary and lower secondary education in one or several subjects. 

When you apply for an assessment, you need to make an overview of your prior experiential learning. In the application you need to give the information about your earlier education, relevant working experience and what you want to be assessed.

This offer is for those of you who have professional experience and/or schooling you cannot document.  Assessment of Prior experiential learning is then a great way to show what you can do

What you get

• Assessment is given in the subjects Norwegian, mathematics, English, natural science and social studies
• Assessment is conducted in Norwegian and it is assessed whether the competence is equivalent according to curriculum LK20 for 10th grade
• The results of the assessment will be "passed"or "not passed"
• The result passed is equivalent to a diploma from primary school
